Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem Claims Historic Gold With Olympic Record in Men's Javelin Throw

"Leading the nation to greatness."

The pride of Pakistan."The architect of a new era."

Who is Arshad Nadeem!

Arshad Nadeem ended Pakistan's 40-year-long wait for an Olympic Gold medal. The 27-year-old, son of a retired construction worker, won the country's first individual medal in Olympic history. He won the men's javelin Gold at the Paris Olympics, beating defending champion Neeraj Chopra in one of the most fiercely fought javelin finals at the Games. Nadeem sealed the Gold with two 90-plus throws, one of them a new Olympic Record of 92.97m.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem made history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by breaking the Olympic record in the men’s javelin throw with a stunning 92.97m throw in the final on Friday. This remarkable achievement not only earned Nadeem the gold medal but also marked Pakistan’s first individual gold in Olympic history.

Nadeem had qualified for the final in fourth place with a throw of 86.59, which was his season-best throw. In the final, he started with a no-throw in his first attempt but threw a massive 92.97m to take the top spot, which he managed to hold on till the end. Only Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Games gold medalist came close with a throw of 89.45m to take the silver medal. His final throw stood at 91.79m.

Nadeem had undergone knee surgery in the United Kingdom before the upcoming 2024 Olympics. With a 90.18m throw, the 27-year-old Pakistani created a new javelin throw record at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to claim the title. It ended Pakistan’s 60-year wait for a CWG gold medal.

It was only the second time that an Asian athlete crossed the 90m mark. Chinese Taipei’s Chao-Tsun Cheng was the first with a throw of 91.26m at the 2017 World Underside, which remains the Asian record. Neeraj Chopra’s personal best throw is 89.94m achieved at the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League.

Arshad Nadeem is also the first Pakistani athlete to win a medal, a silver, at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest 2023.Nadeem’s journey to this historic moment began when he became the first Pakistani to qualify for an Olympic final in athletics, finishing fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Games. His triumph in Paris is particularly significant as it represents Pakistan’s first Olympic medal since the 1992 Barcelona Games and only the fourth gold in the nation’s Olympic history.

This victory also brings Pakistan its 11th Olympic medal overall and is the country’s first-ever medal in athletics,
